Do you know the history and evolution of self closing hydraulic hinges? We’ll tell you.

Colcom has revolutionised the glass market inventing its self closing hydraulic hinges.

In the early 2000s, we at Colcom were wondering what we could do to support our customers in developing their projects in a time-saving manner, providing solutions for quick and easy installation of efficient premium quality products with technical features and an attractive appearance.

Up until then, only conventional floor-embedded flush-mounted door closers had been available on the market.

Installation entailed numerous drawbacks:

  • Frequent on-site inspections
  • Risk of accidentally damaging the existing flooring during renovation work
  • Ugly and unsightly floor counter-plates and overhead door closer arms
  • Significant costs for breaking into the floor and installing floor closers and grouting
  • This meant that installation was lengthy and very expensive.

This led our R&D department to focus on designing a product that could get round these problems and encompass the same technical features as a door closer, but only the size of hinge, something we were very familiar with as we started manufacturing hinges for glass panes as far back as  1961

Colcom filed the first world patent for hydraulic door closer hinges in 2006.

  • Hydraulic internal movement
  • Constant automatic and controlled closure of the door

Self closing Hydraulic  hinges are the combined evolution of automatic and mechanical hinges and, as already mentioned, only conventional floor-embedded door closers were previously available on the market

Designed for use on interior and exterior doors and shower enclosures, hydraulic hinges have completely changed the concept of door closer, by incorporating the same closing mechanism as an extremely small hinge with a minimalist design but without having to break into the floor.

The main features of the hydraulic concept are maximum performance combined with advanced technology and safe movement. No less important is the emphasis on the aesthetic appearance in line with current architectural trends, which require a minimal visual impact of accessories to make them adaptable to environments in very different styles.
